Memorial Day at FlyboardLI

This past weekend America celebrated Memorial Day with cities and towns across the nation putting on parades and fairs and all sorts of other events to honor those who fought and died protecting the ideas of our country. At FlyboardLI, we made sure to take some time away from the jet skis and boards, away from the barbeque grills, to reflect on those who had made the ultimate sacrifice so that we were free to do the things we love the most.

History of Memorial Day

“All gave some, some gave all,” is a frequently spoken and written saying regarding those who have served in our military branches. Memorial Day is set aside at the end of May to specifically honor those who gave all dating back to combatants in the American Civil War. At FlyboardLI, we share our island home with national cemeteries such as Long Island National Cemetery, which saw over 10,000 Americans killed in World War II enter their gates to find a final resting place within the first eight years of the grounds being open for burials.

Originally referred to as Decoration Day after the American Civil War, veterans set aside a day to decorate the graves of those who had fallen in the war. Although unofficial decoration days had taken place in the U.S. before this time, the years after the Civil War mark the beginning of a national day of remembrance. Now a federal holiday, Memorial Day is observed every year on the last Monday of May. Outside of parades and other public events like concerts and town fairs, many people choose to visit cemeteries and memorials and volunteers place flags on graves at national cemeteries.

Flyboarding and Memorial Day

On Memorial Day, flags are flown at half-staff until noon and then raised to the top of the flag poles in order to both honor those who gave their lives and celebrate the freedoms that they paid for so dearly. As silly as it may sound, flyboarding is one of those freedoms. As Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer in the U.S., it also ushers in flyboard season. Although Memorial Day is meant to honor those that are gone, FlyboardLI continues to recognize active military, reserve and guard members and all veterans with a 10% discount on any individual or group session. We know that sacrifices are made by all, great and small, and will always acknowledge service in our armed forces.

Flyboard Sessions in 2015

In 2015 we plan to bring flyboarding to as many first time flyers as possible while looking forward to seeing returnees from last year as well. We will be at several events this summer and will also be adding new locations and equipment to our offerings so be sure to keep up with us on the webpage or social media for what’s going on each week. We have a great FAQ section if you want to know more and our photos and videos will give you an idea of all the fun you can have on a flyboard. We’ve got gear for you to sport and deals for you to take advantage of as we strive to make the 2015 season one to remember!
